Meet the Team


T E A M   A E S O P

Hello! We are Team Aesop, a 2.008 yoyo team. From left to right, the team members are: Khanh Nguyen, Mario Macedo, Thulith Edirisinghe, Joshua Graves, and Elizabeth Vasquez. We are super excited to be creating our own custom-made yoyos this semester in 2.008, and will be using this blog to keep you updated on our progress! Our team name comes from Aesop as in Aesop's fables -- this may be a hint to our future yoyo design, so stay tuned for the next blog post!

The Race Begins!

Hare Part Mold Design The hare mold was designed with a scale factor of 1.035 and is shown in the figures below. The part was designed with no draft as it is not necessary given the contours of the part. The parting line was placed at the largest outer diameter in the part. The parting surface was is on the outside of the part and it extends 0.2 inches from the part. The contours that make up the hare features are all located on the cavity. The locations of the mounting holes are based on the referenced mounting holes for the injection molding blocks that already machined. The sprue hole is placed above the part in the mold in both the cavity and core molds. The extrusion in the part, which is meant for the felt part of our design, is accounted for in the core mold, where extruded boss is placed. Our Story Final Yo-Yo Description Our final yo-yo is an assembly with four main parts as well as a stand that it rests on. The assembly consists of two body parts that screw into each other and two custom-made parts that snap onto the body parts. Inspired by the theme of the fable The Tortoise and the Hare by Aesop, one of the custom parts is a turtle shell with the head insert-molded, and the other is a hare body with the tail insert-molded. The yo-yo is entirely injection-molded and the stand is thermoformed. The turtle half of the yo-yo consists of a lime green body part and a caramel-colored shell. The shell was probably one of the hardest parts to make because the intricate pattern of the mold for the shell had to be 3D-machined on the Haas. It took multiple tries for the machining to work, and the machine cycle time for the engraving of the shell was around five to six hours.
